Recently, the third Xuannan Bookstore made its appearance in the Fayuan Temple historical and cultural block. The fourth Xuannan Bookstore is also about to be completed in Changxindian, Fengtai District, the first outside of Xicheng District.

Walking along Nanheng West Street, it's hard not to notice this bookstore in a renovated siheyuan. Its black bricks and tiles and red decorations are eye-catching and match its old-style surroundings perfectly in the Fayuan Temple area. Inside the bookstore, flowers and other plants as well as the wooden interior design create a peaceful and warm atmosphere for reading.

There are separate reading spaces, as well as study rooms and private rooms. Foodies can find yummy treats here, such as the "Fayuan Temple" coffee exclusive to this store, and winter specials like persimmons and baked sweet potatoes.

The Fayuan Temple branch of Xuannan Bookstore has been offering study trips featuring intangible cultural heritage items like cloisonné enamel and Beijing-style painted clay Rabbit Lords. It also plans to offer night school courses on calligraphy, cross-talk, storytelling, Beijing-style drum singing and other traditional cultural programs in cooperation with Niujie Sub-district. When the weather gets warmer, folk art performances will also be staged regularly.

The second-phase construction project of this store is currently underway. Once completed, the space will be expanded significantly, and diners featuring Russian dishes and American barbecue will probably be provided the complex.

In 2018, the Fayuan Temple historical and cultural block, among the second batch of historical and cultural areas under the municipal protection in Beijing, launched its urban renewal and protective upgrading project. The old guild hall has been transformed into a new gathering place, where there are neighborhood coffee shops, Xuannan Bookstore and other venues that can benefit the local residents in their daily lives. Residents are encouraged to participate in the renovations of old houses. Xicheng District will continue to promote the transformation and upgrading of business forms, strengthen functions essential to people's well-being, advance the progressive urban renewal model, and truly revitalize this time-honored block.
