In 2024, Beijing is set to expedite the application of self-driving technologies across various transportation sectors. By the end of the year, the city will test self-driving cars at airports and railway stations as well as in the road freight sector, among other areas and industries. The city aims to progressively expand the application scenarios of autonomous driving technologies to ultimately foster a shift in the ways city dwellers travel.
Furthermore, Beijing will accelerate the third phase construction of the High-level Autonomous Driving Demonstration Zone, which is expected to grow to 600 square kilometers by June this year.
In addition, traffic lights will also become increasingly "smart". Beijing plans to upgrade more than 1,500 outdated traffic lights and install an additional 1,000 network-connected ones this year to improve traffic efficiency.
