The Beijing Cui Yongping Shadow Puppet Art Museum was approved by and registered with Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage and opened on April 22, 2004. It was sponsored by Mr. Cui Yongping of the former Beijing Shadow Show Troupe and his wife. It is located in Unit 4, Building 16, Jinqiao Garden, Majuqiao, Tongzhou District, Beijing, with an exhibition area of 250 sqm.
More than 30,000 pieces are displayed in the museum, from different periods including the Ming Dynasty, the Qing Dynasty, the Republic of China, and the Anti-Japanese War period, collected from places such as Hebei, Hubei, Shandong, Sichuan, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Gansu, and Qinghai provinces. Some of the shadow play works designed by Mr. Cui Yongping are also displayed in the museum. The exhibition covers the creation process, shadow art demonstration, materials used in shadow plays throughout history, stage property, scripts, and performance techniques of shadow play shows. There was no museum of this kind before in Beijing or even in China. The museum fills this gap and is of great historical significance for the inheritance and preservation of this ancient folk culture and art in China.
