The 11th Xiqu Opera Black Box Festival has opened, offering audience a chance to enjoy a diverse array of performances until December 31.
This year's festival features 18 original and classic productions from 15 troupes in China. The productions of two regional genres, Chuju Opera and Danju Opera, will make their debut during the festival.
The festival is divided into four sections: "New Interpretations of Classics", which showcases fascinating operatic adaptations of literary masterpieces from China and abroad; "Tradition Reimagined", which highlights emerging artists with innovative takes on classic works; "Original Works", which reinterprets China's rich traditional culture connotations from new and unique perspectives; and "Children's Works", which presents accessible opera pieces that are both educational and entertaining for young viewers.
In addition to performances, the festival will host cultural activities, including academic seminars, opera-themed salons, lectures by renowned artists, and outreach programs for children. A special exhibition will be staged to commemorate the 130th birthday of Mei Lanfang, a Peking Opera master.
