19:30 | Thursday | Oct 14 | Poly Theatre
Ticket (CNY): VIP880/680/380/180/50
The BMF ceremoniously celebrated Gustav Mahler's centenary in 2011, and this year, it pays homage to the composer from a new and unique perspective.
The year Mahler died witnessed the birth of the Chinese composer Ding Shande. This coincidence is marked in this concert conducted by the young and vigorous Yang Yang, the Music Director of Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra and China National Opera House, which focuses on their art songs celebrating the various interests and taste of everyday life, a theme not often visited by classical composers.
Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn is a collection of songs that draws material from folk poetry that doesn't attempt to euphemize its thorny side. He wrote them into musical fables with sparkling, vivid images. The renowned baritone Yuan Chenye is known for his affinity with Mahler.
