ZIFTIC Background

Since its inception in 2017, ZIFTIC has taken place for 4 straight years, attracted over 4,000 innovation project entries from China and beyond, and discovered more than 400 excellent start-ups and entrepreneurial teams.

It has provided nearly CNY 400 million in financial support to 156 high-quality cutting-edge technology enterprises and  targeted support services like scenario-based supply and demand partnering, investment and financing services, project launch services, business counseling, and residencies for talented individuals.

39 of these enterprises have grown into global unicorns and 7 have gone public on domestic and overseas capital markets. All in all, ZIFTIC has developed into a hard technology competition brand of global importance.

Competition zones & domains

ZIFTIC 2021 will be held in 3 competition zones - Beijing Zone, Tianjin-Hebei Zone, and International Zone, in accordance with the principle of Global Selection and Public Promotion.

The event will focus on 3 domains: Biological Health, AI & Big Data, and Intelligent Manufacturing & New Materials.

Prize money offered in the finals: 1 champion, CNY 600,000; 1 second place winner, CNY 300,000; 1 third place winner, CNY 100,000

Title of honor: Along with the titles of “champion”, “second place winner” and “third place winner” to be granted in the finals, the top 10 competitors in each domain/zone will be granted the title of “TOP10” for that domain/zone.

Process and schedule

The ZIFTIC 2021 selection process consists of 5 steps: registration, qualification review, preliminary competition, semi-finals, and finals.

ZIFTIC 2021 Entry instructions

(I) Requirements for entries

1. Participating teams: A participating team (from a college or research institution, not registered as an enterprise) must be engaged in the development of frontier technologies, frontier products and related services across emerging sectors. The products and technologies deemed suitable for entry in ZIFTIC 2021 must be new and promising and free of any intellectual property dispute.

Participating team members must be in good standing with no bad records.

2. Participating enterprises: A participating enterprise must be engaged in the development and commercialization of frontier technologies and related services across emerging sectors, and be innovation-driven with potential for growth.

All participating enterprises operating in a field other than sports or agricultural science must have been registered after January 1, 2014.

The underlying products, technologies and patents of a participating project may in no way be involved in any intellectual property dispute.

Participating enterprises must operate within the constraints of the law and be in good standing with no bad records.

3. International Zone: Besides the aforementioned requirements, participating members of an International Zone enterprise or team must have experience studying, working or starting a business abroad in the last 3 years.

Participating enterprises or teams may take part in ZIFTIC 2021 activities on- or off-line and prepare materials and defense in Chinese or English.

Registration Guidelines for Different Domains

I. Biomedicine

R&D of innovative drugs, first-time generics and novel adjuvants that seek to treat COVID-19, malignant tumors, cardio-cerebrovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, mental diseases, autoimmune diseases, infections with resistant pathogenic bacteria, tuberculosis, viral infections and other common or frequently-occurring diseases, represented by targeted drugs, gene-based drugs, recombinant protein drugs and vaccines.

II. Medical equipment

Key technologies like gene-based diagnosis and treatment, immune deficiency diagnosis and treatment, AI-based diagnosis and treatment, high-throughput genome sequencing, biomedical materials, minimally invasive implantation (intervention) devices, novel digital medical imaging devices, high-end diagnosis and treatment devices and novel biochips.

III. AI

R&D of and platform development for key underlying technologies (e.g., underlying frameworks for deep learning, digital service platforms, novel core chip architectures) and core algorithms and technologies (e.g., human brain-inspired bionic computing, transfer learning, reinforcement learning, natural language processing, computer vision, voice recognition, biological recognition, HMI, knowledge mapping), novel applications of AI in the sectors of transportation, security, healthcare, manufacturing, finance and public service.

IV. Integrated circuits (ICs)

Development of power semiconductors (e.g., memories, FPGA, high-performance processors, high-precision analog chips, RF front-end chips, sensors, IGBT) and IC design software (e.g., EDA, system simulation software, verification software), R&D and commercialization of key devices, parts and materials for IC manufacturing lines, R&D and innovation of chips specially designed for the sectors of AI, VR/AR, intelligent communication, IoT, information security, smart grid chips, industrial control and automotive electronics.

V. Big data and cloud computing

Big data: R&D of big data underlying technologies, high-performance big data devices, big data acquisition and pre-processing technologies, cloud storage technologies, cloud databases, data security devices, data visualization devices, big data algorithms, novel applications of big data in industries and scenarios like transportation, finance, education, healthcare, government service, agriculture and retail.

Cloud computing: R&D and application of IaaS-, PaaS- and SaaS-level technologies (e.g., network devices, storage devices, servers, virtualization, data centers, cloud operating systems, cloud management platforms, cloud security), R&D and commercialization of standard middleware and cloud application infrastructure products.

VI. Smart cities and IoT

Smart cities: R&D of key technologies across agile connection, real-time service, data optimization, application intelligence and data security, R&D and IoT application of frontier technologies (e.g., blockchain, edge computing, sensors, 5G), development of IoT platforms for device management, connection management, application enabling and business analysis.

IoT: application of IoT technologies in emergency response, food and drug regulation, intelligent parks, e-government, digital urban management, intelligent environmental protection, urban safety, intelligent tourism, intelligent transportation and intelligent logistics.

VII. 5G

5G communication protocols, millimeter waves, small base stations, network slicing, MEC, cloud computing, massive antenna arrays, satellite communication, increase in 5G+ integrated application scenarios, breakthroughs in core technologies across various sectors, pre-research on 6G-related technologies (e.g., 6G communication protocols, quantum communication, THz communication, visible light communication, satellite internet, Beidou, holographic radio, massive intelligent surfaces), other efforts to underpin next-generation mobile communication.

VIII. IoV

Typical application scenarios and technologies such as self-driving, high-definition map and high-precision positioning, intelligent coordinated passing through intersection, usage-based insurance (UBI), vehicle collision warning, networked fleet driving, automatic parking, road condition perception, vehicle-road-cloud integration and adaptive cruise control, other IoV-related application projects.

IX. Intelligent manufacturing (IM) and new materials

IM: R&D and commercialization of industrial robots (e.g., human-machine cooperation, digital workshops, smart factories), service robots (e.g., intelligent driving, edutainment, healthcare), special robots (e.g., public security, emergency rescue, special operations) and core components of robots (e.g., controllers, servo motors, drivers, harmonic reducers, autonomous and controllable robot operating systems).

R&D of technologies including industrial internet, industrial big data, high-end digital control systems, industrial simulation software, 3D printing, micro and nano fabrication, precision measurement and analysis and UAVs.

New materials: the development of sophisticated metal material technologies (e.g., high-performance light alloy) and advanced material technologies (e.g., iron-based superconductors, liquid metals, graphene, high-performance fibers, composite materials), R&D and application of advanced inorganic non-metal materials, high-performance fibers and fibrous products and frontier new materials, R&D and commercialization of advanced display materials (e.g., OLED).

X. Energy conservation, environmental protection and new energy

Energy conservation (primarily, industrial energy efficiency and building energy efficiency, etc.): carbon capture, utilization and storage, efficient industrial furnaces (kilns), deep recycling of industrial waste energy, optimization of industrial system energy efficiency, advanced energy-efficient buildings, clean heating, green transportation, application of digital and intelligent energy-saving technologies in industrial enterprises, buildings and infrastructure.

Environmental protection: technical equipment and integrated applications in air pollution prevention and control, water pollution prevention and control, soil management and remediation, solid waste treatment, vibration and noise reduction and online environmental monitoring.

New energy: R&D of technologies including proprietary hydrogen batteries and fuel batteries, battery replacement technologies, fast charge, graphene battery, solid state battery, solar power generation, heat utilization, advanced nuclear energy systems, clean high value-added coal chemical industry, key advanced equipment for oil and gas exploitation and internet-related energy technologies.

XI. Sport science

R&D, innovation and application of high-end sport equipment, high-end athletic equipment, sport-related healthcare, gymnasium construction, live streaming of sport events and sport services; digitalized and networked production, dissemination and consumption of sport products and services.

XII. Agricultural science

Agricultural life science, plant growing, animal culturing, animal health, agricultural resources, agricultural environment, food science and agricultural engineering, R&D and commercialization of monitoring systems and whole-process technologies from culturing and planting to food delivery; development of platforms for food safety inspection and foodborne disease tracing, prevention and warning.
