As of October 3, 2021, automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are available in all subway stations in Beijing, including those on newly opened lines. Location maps of AEDs are posted at visible places in subway stations, such as the security check areas and turnstiles. In case of any spotted or reported emergency where a passenger faints or suffers, the staff will immediate arrive with AED equipment to provide aid, and call 120/999 for professional assistance. The subway PA system will also be used to ask medical professionals on the subway for help.
What is an AED?
An AED is a first-aid device that can automatically analyze abnormal heart rhythms and deliver electric shocks or defibrillation. It is a more efficient method than hands-only Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for rescuing people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. For the best part of AED equipment, it requires only sufficient training instead of solid professional background for someone to operate this life-saving device.
What to do when a faint happens
1. Ensure the environment is safe. Pat the person gently and speak to him or her with a loud voice to check whether the person is responding;
2. If there is no response, you should first call 120 and then get an AED;
3. Check the breathing (5-10 seconds). If there is no normal breathing, conduct CPR immediately;
4. As soon as an AED is available, turn it on and place pads on the person's chest according to the instructions on the pads;
5. After the automatic analysis of heart rhythm starts, follow the voice instructions.
Guidance for Using an AED
Step 1: Turn on the AED. Some AEDs are ready for use after the cover has been lifted, while some need to be turned on by pressing the power-on button.
Step 2: Attach the pads correctly and plug the pad connector cable into the AED. Follow the instructions on the pads and place one pad on the upper right side of the chest and the other pad on the lower left side of the chest, a few inches below the left armpit.
Step 3: The AED will start the automatic analysis process.
*Please note that no one shall touch the person so as to avoid inaccurate analysis. Within three to six seconds, the AED analysis will be done and further voice instructions will be given.
Step 4: Defibrillation will be initiated.
After the automatic analysis, the AED will be charged automatically. A clearly visible button for electric shock delivery will light up. Press the button to complete the delivery.
*Please note that no one shall touch the person's skin with bare hands or other parts of the body to avoid electric shocks.
