After applying for a temporary motor vehicle driving permit, foreigners are only permitted to drive rental cars, and may not operate vehicles owned by private citizens. According to provisions of Article 9 in the Provisions on the Administration of Motor Vehicles and Drivers of Temporary Entry (Order No. 90 of the Ministry of Public Security), an overseas motor vehicle driver who has entered the country on a temporary basis may drive either a motor vehicle in their own possession or a motor vehicle rented in China.
