In light of recent incidents of unauthorized transactions resulting from password-free payments, the China Consumers Association has warned consumers to use this mobile payment feature cautiously when shopping online, as overly permissive account settings can lead to financial losses.

Password-free payment, also referred to as "payment without password confirmation", is a feature introduced by some payment platforms or Apps to enhance payment convenience. After a user enables this feature, a single transaction below a certain amount can be directly made without the need for a password. However, this feature, if used by the wrong hands, may bring serious security risks. For example, if someone else has gained access to your account or device, he/she can make direct purchases for products and services including virtual services through password-free payment, without the need for secondary verification.

To reduce the risk of unauthorized transactions, consumers are advised to take the following measures:

Don't enable the password-free payment feature unless necessary

Check if your Alipay account, WeChat account or bank card has been linked to your account(s) on the shopping platform(s) you use, and disable the password-free payment feature. If you do need to use password-free services, separate settings are advised. In addition, check the authorized Apps regularly and remove payment authorizations for infrequently used or untrusted third-party Apps.

Enhance account security protection

First, set strong password(s) for your account(s) and remember to change it/them regularly. Also, enable the two-factor authentication function to prevent unauthorized access to your account(s).

Second, disable non-essential authorizations related to payment services.

Third, avoid paying by using public Wi-Fi to prevent data interception.

How to respond quickly to unauthorized transactions?

-Immediately disable your payment method, contact your bank's customer services, Alipay or WeChat to disable the associated account at once to stop the subsequent deductions.

-Save screenshots of the unauthorized transactions, transaction times and other information, and file a complaint with the payment platform concerned.

-If the amount of loss is significant, report to the public security authorities in a timely manner and provide evidence.

The China Consumers Association reminds that in case of consumer disputes, you can call its hotline or report your loss on the "China Consumers Association 315" (全国消协智慧315) online platform.
