Beijing has introduced two additional luminous "smart zebra crossings", which are located at the entrance of the junior high school campus of Beijing Ritan High School in CBD and the intersection of Jianwai Yidao Street and Yong'anli Middle Street. The "smart zebra crossings" are embedded with "small square bricks" that will flash yellow lights when pedestrians enter the area, reminding them to cross the street safely and warn drivers to pay attention, thereby reducing traffic accidents.
The ground lights inserted between the zebra crossings will use solar panels to capture daylight energy and transform it into power, which is how the crossings can flash. They will automatically detect that the sunlight is faint at night due to the low visibility, and the ground lights will turn on. In addition to offering travel safety, the "smart zebra crossings" also create a stunning nighttime perspective of the city.
Before this, Chaoyang District, Dongcheng District, and Shunyi District already had "smart zebra crossings" added at some intersections.
