In the early morning of February 29 (UTC+8), at the 234th World Athletics Council Meeting held in Glasgow, United Kingdom, it was decided that the 2027 World Athletics Championships will take place in Beijing. This will mark the return of the Athletics World Championships to Beijing 12 years after the session in China's capital in 2015.

Sebastian Coe, the President of World Athletics, congratulated Beijing on successfully securing the hosting rights for the 2027 Athletics World Championships. He said, "China is one of the biggest sports markets in the world. It was the top performer for Wanda Diamond League broadcast consumption in 2023 with a cumulative audience of 368.9 million. This poses a massive opportunity to grow our sport and fan base in one of the biggest commercial markets in the world."
