Beijing Museum of Traditional Opera was built and officially opened to the public on September 6, 1997. It is the 100th museum that is built in Beijing, undertaking the task of popularizing the knowledge of opera and displaying the best works of opera.

The museum is located inside the Beijing Huguang Gildhall Chamber, which was founded in the 12th year of Jiaqing of the Qing Dynasty (1807) and was once a gathering place for students and merchants from Hunan and Hubei provinces. The big theater stage in the museum has fine tradition of Peking Opera culture. It is a famous opera performance venue, with masters such as Tan Xinpei, Yu Shuyan and Mei Lanfang have performed here.
