January 20 is Major Cold, the last solar term of winter— in the traditional Chinese calendar. As the saying goes, "After the Major Cold, a new year begins." During this period, people engage in traditional customs such as "eating hearty meals," "house cleaning," and "putting up New Year decorations." These activities create a festive atmosphere full of people's anticipation and hope for a better life in the coming year.
The "Beijing's Vibe of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Chinese Solar Terms", a short video series jointly produced by Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism and CRI Online", has released its "Major Cold" episode, featuring two intangible cultural heritages of Beijing: paper-cutting and the roasting techniques of Kaorouji. It provides a vivid and comprehensive glimpse into the rich New Year traditions of Beijing.
