The museum was once the former residence of Mei Lanfang, a maestro of Peking opera. It consists of two sections—a main courtyard and an outer one. The main courtyard retains its original appearance, with furnishings in the reception room, study, bedroom and living quarters arranged exactly as they were during Mei Lanfang's lifetime. The east and west exhibition halls host thematic exhibitions. The outer courtyard houses the South Exhibition Hall, temporary exhibition halls, a space for creative merchandise, and other facilities. As a permanent exhibition space, the South Exhibition Hall, through precious graphics, texts, and audiovisual materials, presents Mei Lanfang's artistic achievements and social activities throughout his life.
The museum offers a wide variety of valuable cultural relics, including calligraphical works and paintings, manuscripts, photographs, scripts, playbills, stage costumes, Ming and Qing-style furniture, etc. It is the world's most comprehensive repository of cultural relics and documents related to Mei Lanfang.
