The museum houses hundreds of cultural relics (including individual artifacts and sets), mainly Beijing's Eight Imperial Handicrafts, such as those made through the techniques of gold lacquer inlay, filigree inlay, and cloisonné (jingtailan), as well as artifacts of other traditional crafts, such as ancient wood carvings and root carvings.

As Beijing's first intangible cultural heritage (ICH) museum that integrates the display of imperial court art with the experiences of imperial court craftsmanship, it was jointly developed over a decade by nearly 100 renowned artisans and ICH inheritors. The museum's main part, Cheng'en Temple, is an architectural complex dating back to the Ming Dynasty with a four-courtyard layout. The complex was first constructed in 1510, and is known as the "most mysterious temple in Beijing".
