The museum's overall architectural layout resembles the shape of the Chinese character "工" (meaning "labor", this character also represents "workers" in some contexts). The main building has seven floors above ground and three underground levels. The first to third floors above ground house the permanent exhibitions on the history of the Communist Party of China (CPC), while the fourth floor and the first underground level serve as thematic exhibition halls. The museum is also equipped with 21 screening halls, as well as a bookstore, a café and other commercial amenities.

The permanent exhibition, titled "Staying True to Our Original Aspiration and Founding Mission", chronicles the CPC's history of over a century, with more than 2,500 photos and more than 4,500 physical exhibits (including individual exhibits and sets) on display.
