The museum has over 7,000 square meters of space reserved for permanent exhibitions that display over 6,000 artifacts. Its five permanent exhibitions are centered on several themes, with one titled "Origins of Civilization" (文明起源). All fine cultural relics on display are directly sourced from field archaeological excavations, and all precious ancient books exhibited are part of the treasured collection of the Chinese Academy of History. Focusing on the uninterrupted 5,000-year-long Chinese civilization and the formation and evolution of a unified, multi-ethnic country, the exhibitions focus on politics, economy, culture and social life of China and the country's exchanges with other countries in different periods from the Paleolithic Age to modern times.
