Beijing's municipal traffic management authority recently issued a reminder that owners of electric bicycles registered before August 31, 2016 shall apply for registration renewals at their local non-motor vehicle registration offices under the district traffic management authorities by August 31 if they wish to continue riding these bicycles on public roads. Owners who fail to complete the required renewals before the deadline will have the corresponding license plates and vehicle registration certificates revoked in accordance with the law.

The renewal requires an on-site vehicle inspection and cannot be completed online. When applying, vehicle owners must bring their identity documents and vehicle registration certificates and take their vehicles for inspection on site. Staff at the non-motor vehicle registration offices will verify vehicle registration information, including all vehicles' appearance and identification codes. For vehicles that have not been modified and meet the requirements, the application will be approved. The original registration certificate will be taken back and replaced with a new certificate valid for one year.

Starting from September 1, Beijing's municipal traffic management authority will lawfully revoke the registration certificates and license plates of electric bicycles that have been registered for over 10 years and whose owners have failed to apply for a renewal in time. Owners will face legal penalties if they continue riding electric bicycles with revoked registration certificates and license plates on public roads.
