Beijing is stepping up efforts to build itself into a world-leading hub for open cooperation in basic research. The city is now home to 55 international sci-tech organizations, including five related to basic research.
In May 2023, China's first cluster for the headquarters of international sci-tech organizations was inaugurated in Chaoyang District. The cluster was jointly established by the China Association for Science and Technology and the People's Government of Beijing Municipality. Over the past three years, the number of international sci-tech organizations in the cluster has doubled from eight to 16, and the cluster has hosted more than 100 international conferences and events.
The cluster has adopted a service mechanism combining government support and operational assistance, with targeted services offered. These provide international sci-tech organizations with a market-oriented, law-based, and internationalized business environment, allowing instant settlement. In March this year, the construction began for an expansion zone for the cluster, with a planned area of 10,000 square meters.
Looking ahead, Beijing will continue to attract more international sci-tech organizations. Support will be provided to the organizations with existing ties to Beijing to help them establish their presence here. The city will also encourage universities, research institutions and leading enterprises to launch new international sci-tech organizations, and attract more overseas organizations to set up representative offices here.
