Starting June 8, 2026, Beijing officially introduced new-style license plates for electric bicycles. For all newly registered electric bicycles, the new plates will be issued free of charge.
Unlike the previous plates which had a white background with black characters, each new plate has a green background with white characters and a white frame. The plate is made of plastic, measuring 200 mm (length) × 100 mm (width), and displays text in two horizontal lines: the top line reads "Beijing" and shows a QR code, while the bottom line shows the plate number.
The Beijing Traffic Management Bureau reminds residents that all old-style plates registered and issued before June 8, 2026 remain valid alongside the new plates, meaning that there's no need to apply for replacement except for certain circumstances.
If an existing vehicle has not been transferred to a new owner and is still being used by the original owner, there is no need to apply for a new-style license plate. However, if the owner applies for a change, transfer, renewal of registration, or replacement or reissuance of the license plate or the driving license, he/she will need to reapply for a new-style license plate.
The license plates must be installed in accordance with the following provisions:
1. The plate must be mounted in the designated position at the rear of the e-bike;
2. The plate must face outward with characters being right-side up (upside-down or reversed installation is prohibited);
3. It must be secured to the mounting holes using special fasteners;
4. No objects or light sources that interfere with plate recognition are allowed near the plate.
