Beijing's high-altitude meadows offer the perfect escape from soaring summer temperatures. With cool mountain breezes, lush grasslands, and spectacular views, these destinations are ideal for hiking, sightseeing, and enjoying nature with family and friends.
Fenghuangtuo Hiking Trail in Yanqing
This 8.5-kilometer trail in Yanqing District weaves together dense forests and Ming Dynasty beacon towers. At the summit lies a sweeping 3,000-mu (about 200-hectare) "Sky Grassland".
Hidden in the mountains are the ruins of a Ming Dynasty beacon tower, where the rough-stone foundation remains clearly visible. Along the way, hikers may encounter natural springs and fast-flowing streams. Pausing to dip a hand into the cool, running water can feel even more refreshing than sitting in an air-conditioned room.

Route 1 (5 kilometers, beginner- and family-friendly):
Xigouli Village→Chocolate & Coffee Café→Stream section
→Ant Nest Viewing Platform→Return to starting point
Route 2 (8.5 kilometers, advanced hikers):
Xigouli Village→Stream section→Dashilong and Xiaoshilong rock formations→Fengtuoliang Beacon Tower Ruins→Fenghuangtuo Summit (1,529 meters above sea level)→Alpine meadow→Pianpoyu Village (endpoint; from here, you can take a taxi back to the starting point)
Tips: Wear hiking shoes with good grip, as some dirt trails may become muddy after rain. The trail is free to access and no reservation is required. However, several unmarked side trails can be confusing, so it is recommended to download the trail map in advance using the 2bulu (两步路) app to avoid getting lost. Mosquitoes and other insects are fierce in summer, so using both insect repellent spray and mosquito-repellent patches is advised. There is nowhere to buy anything at the summit, so be sure to bring enough food and water.
Lingshan Ancient Trail
In April, the Juling Gorge (Lingshan Ancient Trail) Scenic Area officially reopened to visitors, inviting nature lovers to experience temperatures 8 °C to 10°C cooler than downtown Beijing and the tranquil atmosphere of a historic pathway that dates back more than 3,000 years.
Following the 8-kilometer Lingshan Ancient Trail leads directly to the summit of Dongling Mountain at an elevation of 2,303 meters, Beijing's highest peak. Along the way, visitors are rewarded with sweeping views of North China's largest alpine meadow, where rolling green hills and crystal-clear mountain springs create picture-perfect scenery at every turn.
Baihua Mountain Scenic Area
Located in Qingshui Town, Mentougou District, Baihua Mountain is home to Baicaopan Peak, which rises to 2,049 meters above sea level, making it Beijing's third-highest mountain. Renowned for its exceptionally high concentration of negative oxygen ions and an average summer temperature of just 22°C, Baihua Mountain is one of the most refreshing summer retreats in the Beijing suburbs.
Its vast alpine meadow at the summit is a particular highlight. From June to August, hundreds of acres of grassland burst into bloom with golden globeflowers, lilies of the valley, and wild lilies, creating a spectacular display of color across the mountainside.
Miaofengshan Forest Park
At an elevation of 1,291 meters, Miaofengshan Forest Park is home to vast, vibrant meadows full of life. Late May marks the peak blooming season for its famous mountain roses, when hundreds of acres of purple-red blossoms cascade across the mountainsides at around 800 meters above sea level. The air is filled with their rich, lingering fragrance, creating a truly enchanting experience.
Yudu Mountain Scenic Area
Located at the foot of Haituo Mountain, the highest peak of the Yan Mountains, Yudu Mountain Scenic Area is an ideal summer retreat, with temperatures rarely exceeding 28°C.
One of its highlights is a 50,000-square-meter alpine meadow, offering expansive green lawns amid stunning mountain scenery. The Yudu Mountain Camping Season is now underway and will run through October 31.
During the camping season, the campsite is open daily from 9:00 to 15:00, with extended hours on weekends and public holidays. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of regular activities, including folk culture performances, hands-on craft workshops, and outdoor themed salons.
Visitors who bring their own camping equipment may use the designated camping areas free of charge. Please keep a close eye on weather conditions and check the scenic area's updates before your visit.
