The China Aviation Museum is located at the foot of Datang Mountain in Changping District, Beijing. Opened to the public in November 1989, the museum is China's first large aviation museum open to visitors. It houses more than 270 planes, 99 planes categorized as the National Cultural Heritage Items of China, and nearly 10,000 other artifacts related to the aviation industry. It is a national-level military-themed museum integrating functions of science and technology education as well as tourism. Covering an area of more than 700,000 square meters, it is the largest aviation museum in Asia and one of the top five largest in the world.
Two grand-size exhibition halls are located inside the museum: the Underground Shelter Exhibition Hall and the Open Air Tarmac Exhibition Hall. More than 200 planes from various countries and more than 600 exhibits like air defense facilities and radars are on display in the Open Air Tarmac Exhibition Hall. The hall also has permanent exhibition areas featuring engines, delicate artifacts, and the plane that belonged to Mao Zedong, the first Chairman of the People's Republic of China.
