Founded on December 29, 2005 and officially opened to the public on February 10, 2007, the China National Film Museum (CNFM) covers an area of 52 mu with an architectural area of nearly 38,000 square meters. So far, it is the world's largest national-level film-themed museum. The museum also serves as a "palace" of art, demonstrating the evolution of Chinese films and film technologies, popularizing film culture, and conducting academic studies and exchanges.

CNFM is an iconic building created in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the first Chinese film. The black surface of the building is decorated with metal plates with engraved patterns. The giant screen in front of the main building and the inclined walls demonstrating an intermittent pattern on the square constitute a large "film clipboard". CNFM has 21 exhibition halls, six projection theaters, and areas for open public events and exhibitions. Two themed exhibitions titled "Great Chapters of Efforts and Endeavors of the New Era Through Projection" and "A Century of History, A Century of Glory" constitute the general exhibition of the museum, showcasing the development and wonderful achievements of Chinese films over the past 100 years.
