Before and after the Qingming Festival in 2023, qingtuans (sticky rice dumplings made with mugwort) were sold like hot cakes. On April 4, the Chinese Institute of Food Science and Technology issued a consumption reminder related to this kind of rice dumplings, advising consumers to choose qingtuans made from natural oil and in normally green color while avoiding those that appear to be bluish or blackish. It is also recommended that qingtuans should be consumed immediately after purchase and that consumers need to avoid storing large quantities of these rice dumplings for a long time. In addition, the elderly, children and people with poor digestive function should eat qingtuans in moderation.

In addition, all consumers should pay attention to the shelf lives and storage conditions of such products and choose the appropriate types of qingtuans according to personal needs. Do not purchase or consume expired qingtuans. It is better to choose qingtuans with a fragrant aroma and natural and shiny green color. Avoid buying those that appear to be bluish, blackish or overly bright.
Qingtuans should be stored for a short time in the refrigerator in tightly sealed bags. Despite that these rice dumplings can be stored for a longer time if frozen, it is still best to consume them within one month.
