Highlights of 2025 Beijing Modern Music Festival

The 2025 Beijing Modern Music Festival (BMMF) was launched in Beijing on May 15 and will run till May 20.

On the evening of May 19, the Contemporary Chinese Symphonic Concert will be conducted by Li Jingzhan and performed by the CCOM (Central Conservatory of Music) Symphony Orchestra, featuring compositions by outstanding composers from the CCOM, such as Yao Chen, Xu Zhitong, Hao Weiya, Zou Hang, and Zhang Shuai.

The closing concert of the BMMF will take place at the Opera and Concert Hall of the Central Conservatory of Music at 19:30 on May 20.

In addition, orchestras from five countries will also participate  in this event. On the evening of May 16, Klangforum Wien from Austria will perform a concert at the CCOM.

Kwartludium from Poland will perform on the afternoon of May 17. Renowned for the improvisational skills of its members, the ensemble specializes in presenting new music pieces composed specifically for their distinctive instrumentation.

The Contemporary Hougaku Ensemble of Senzoku Gakuen College of Music from Japan will perform on the evening of May 17. Using instruments including the shakuhachi, koto, Tsugaru shamisen, erhu and sheng, the ensemble will interpret traditional Chinese and Japanese instrumental music in a contemporary fashion.

The Ulysses Quartet from the United States will perform on the afternoon of May 18.

The Hard Rain Soloist Ensemble from Northern Ireland will present a dedicated concert on the afternoon of May 19.

Moreover, on the mornings of May 17, 18, and 19, musicians from world-renowned performing groups will host lectures and masterclasses, sharing their insights into the entire journey of music creation from initial inspiration to stage performances. They will also explore the academic achievements and future trends in music across diverse regions and ethnic groups, while discussing key issues in contemporary music composition.
