Built back in 1530 during the Ming Dynasty, the Temple of Ancient Monarchs served as a sacred site where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties offered sacrifices to ancient Chinese rulers, ministers, and generals. The complex consists of the Spirit Wall (影璧), the Main Gate (庙门), the Bell Tower (钟楼), Jingde Gate (景德门) and Jingde Chongsheng Hall (景德崇圣殿), with two stele pavilions standing on each side of the hall. As the only existing imperial temple of the Ming and Qing dynasties for worshipping the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, as well as successive emperors, civil and military officials, it stands as a testament to the continuous and unbroken development of China as a unified multi-ethnic country.
