Launch ceremony of the UIPM 2026 Obstacle World Championships

The UIPM (International Modern Pentathlon Union) 2026 Obstacle World Championships will be held from September 2 to 6 at Universal CityWalk Beijing.

At a press conference on July 21, Rob Stull, the president of the UIPM, said that the world's top 50-ranked athletes, along with other competitors from across the globe, would compete in Beijing. Stull described the events as a world-class spectacle that combines top-tier athleticism with elements of entertainment, ensuring broad international appeal.

The UIPM Obstacle World Championships represent the world's premier standalone obstacle racing competition. This year's championships will feature five events: 100m individual, 400m individual, 4×100m relay, 3km individual, and 3km team races. A mixed-gender 4×100m relay has been added to the program. The championships have also introduced U11 and U13 categories for the 100m and 3km events, creating opportunities for more younger athletes to compete in the world championships.

The competition is divided into elite and age-group divisions. Athletes in the elite division must participate as part of national or regional teams, while the age-group division is open to obstacle racing enthusiasts of all ages worldwide.

As one of UIPM's premier international events, this year's championships are an important part of four consecutive editions scheduled to be held in Beijing from 2025 to 2028. Obstacle racing, a new component of modern pentathlon, will replace equestrian when it makes its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

At the press conference, the Beijing Tourism Group and the National Olympic Sports Center signed a strategic cooperation agreement. The two parties will cooperate in hosting the UIPM Obstacle World Championships for the next three years.
