Why do Chinese visas have different types and categories?

A visa is the basis for the activities the holder may engage in while in China. In light of China’s laws and regulations, Consular Officers make the decision on what type of visa to issue to an applicant based on the applicant’s personal status and purpose for visiting China.

Instructions on Application for International Student Residence Permit

Go through the formalities for stay or residence registration for them with the exit/entry administrations of public security organs under people’s governments at or above the county level in the places of their parents’stay or residence.
For internship up to 90 days

For an applicant to participate in an internship program lasting for no more than 90 days(apply via the"Short-term Foreigner's Work Permit"section of the Service System for Foreigners Working in China).
Issuance of Identity Certificate of Chinese Fiscal Resident

In order to enjoy the treatment under the taxation treaties signed by the Government of the People's Republic of China with those of foreign countries, the taxation arrangements signed by the Chinese Mainland with Hong Kong and Macao.The time needed by the applicant for submitting supplementary materials shall not be included in the time limit for the aforesaid work.
