On July 17, the "Jinghua Feiyu: Special Exhibition of Common Birds in Beijing" (京华飞羽——北京常见鸟类专题展) opened at the China Science and Technology Museum, with 146 bird specimens of 63 common bird species in Beijing on display there.

Beijing is among the world's major cities with exceptionally rich avian biodiversity. As of April this year, a total of 531 bird species have now been documented in Beijing, accounting for more than one-third of all bird species nationwide.

Housed in a circular corridor on the third floor of the Main Exhibition Hall of the China Science and Technology Museum, the exhibition will remain open until October 30. The exhibition features specimens of key protected wild animals, such as the oriental stork and brown eared-pheasant, and educates the public about the fascinating secrets of bird nesting behaviors. One such example is that mandarin ducks prefer to build their nests in hidden, natural tree hollows near water, whereas the Chinese penduline tit, also known as the "architect of the avian world" for its extraordinary nest-building craftsmanship, weaves nests out of plant fibers and animal fur.
