On May 25, the 4th National Urban Household Waste Sorting Publicity Week (第四届全国城市生活垃圾分类宣传周) was officially launched. Official data show that the reduction rate of the city's household waste has now exceeded 20 percent over the past six years, while the average daily volume of recyclables collected has increased by 200 percent.

Since the revised Regulations of Beijing Municipality on the Management of Household Waste came into effect six years ago, the city has been able to process a larger amount of waste per day, with the daily figure rising from 24,780 tons to 32,300 tons. The volume of green electricity generated from waste incineration and biogas has even exceeded 3 billion kilowatt-hours, up nearly 50 percent. Meanwhile, the daily amount of household waste processed has dropped to 21,600 tons, indicating a reduction rate of over 20 percent, while the recycling and utilization rate of household waste has risen to 43 percent. The average daily volume of the recyclable materials collected and recycled has also exceeded 9,166 tons, marking a 200-percent increase.

Moving forward, Beijing will continue to improve its recycling system by installing more easy-to-use recycling machines and organizing activities such as designated collection days and low-carbon markets. These will provide residents with more accessible ways for recycling. The city will also advance the construction of refined sorting centers for recyclable materials to establish an efficient, stable, and integrated recycling network.
