May 22 marks the 25th International Day for Biodiversity. On this day, Beijing released its first white paper titled Biodiversity Conservation in Beijing, which systematically demonstrates the capital's ideas, actions on and achievements in biodiversity conservation.
According to field surveys conducted between 2020 and 2024, Beijing has recorded 151 natural and seminatural ecosystems, covering forest, brushwood, grassland, swamp and aquatic vegetation. Regarding biodiversity, a total of 7,121 species across various categories have been documented, including algae, higher plants, vertebrates, insects, macro fungi, and benthic macroinvertebrates.
In terms of genetic diversity, Beijing has collected and preserved 56,000 crop germplasm samples and 15,000 livestock genetic materials. The city has safeguarded 47 essential species of natural forest germplasm resources and over 41,000 ancient and famous trees. Additionally, it features 14 agricultural products with geographical indications, such as Jingxi rice, Beijing duck, and Beijing fatty.
The white paper Biodiversity Conservation in Beijing was jointly released by Beijing Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau, Beijing Municipal Commission of Planning and Natural Resources, Beijing Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and Beijing Municipal Forestry and Parks Bureau. It is Beijing's first white book on biodiversity.
