1. Foreigners who pay a visit to their foreign family members staying in Beijing because of work or study, including spouse, children under the age of 18, and parents (of the spouse).

2. Foreign nationals of Chinese origin over the age of 60 who have purchased real estate in Beijing.

1. A valid passport or other international travel documents.

2. A VISA / STAY PERMIT / RESIDENCE PERMIT APPLICATION FORM with recent half-length, white background, bareheaded, full-faced 2-inch color photo.

4. Foreigners aged 18-70 who apply for residence permits with a validity period of more than one year are required to submit the Verification Certificate of Medical Examination Records of Overseas Personnel issued by Entry-Exit Health and Quarantine Department of China within 6 months.

5. Foreigners who apply for family visit shall submit:

a. Letters from the person to be visited.

b. Foreigner's Residence Permit.

c. Marriage Certificate, Medical Certificate of Birth, Notarial Certificates and other certificate of family relationship (S1 holders are exempted from submission.)

These supportive documents on family relationship issued by foreign authorities or notary offices need to be authenticated by the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in the relevant country or performed with Apostille of the country in accordance with the regulations.

6. Foreign nationals of Chinese origin who have purchased real estate shall submit:

a. Housing Ownership Certificate under the applicant's name or Notarized Housing Transaction Contract.

b. Certificate of deposit or bank statement (not less than the minimum living standard in Beijing).

7. Foreigners who need to receive medical assistance and services in Beijing shall submit Medical Diagnosis Certificate or Hospital Admission Notice issued by a local medical institution at or above the district level or at or above the second-class A medical institution for more than six months, and the caregiver shall also submit the accompanying certificate issued by the medical institution or supportive documents on family relationship.

8. Foreigners who need to reside in Beijing due to other private business shall submit certificates, application letters or guarantees related to their subject matter.

9. Foreign nationals of Chinese origin shall submit a copy of their passport of the People's Republic of China, household registration certificate, ID card, etc., which can confirm that they once had PRC nationality (or proof that their parents have/have had PRC nationality).

1. Relevant formalities shall be handled by the person himself/herself at the exit-entry administration of the public security organs. For applicants who are high-level and exceptional ability talents qualified as much-needed of the state, or aged under 16 or above 60 and inconvenient to travel due to disability, the host organization, the applicant's family members or a particular service agency can submit the application on behalf of the applicant.

Any unit or individual that is notified by the exit-entry administration of the public security organs for an interview may not be issued the Visa/Stay Permit and Residence Permit according to the law, in case of failure to undergo the interview within the agreed time without justifiable reasons. The decision made by the exit-entry administration of the public security organs on rejecting the applications for extension, renewal or reissuance of ordinary visa or on not issuing foreigners' stay or residence permits or on not extending the duration of residence shall be final.

2. If the nationality is unknown or in conflicts, the foreign passport and the permanent residence permit of the country where the passport is issued, the naturalization certificate and other relevant materials for nationality identification shall be submitted. The applicant, who is under 18 years old and is applying for the first time in China, shall also submit his/her Medical Certificate of Birth or Birth Certificate, the passport of his/her parents and the certificate of residence outside China and other documents related to the determination of nationality.

3. The application materials shall be submitted in original.

4. Relevant materials in foreign languages shall be translated into Chinese.

5. Persons who have not canceled their Chinese household registration and resident identity card shall apply again upon cancellation.

Article 32 of the Exit and Entry Administration Law of the People's Republic of China

Foreigners residing in China who apply for the extension of the duration of residence shall, within 30 days prior to the expiry of the validity period on their residence permits, file applications with the exit/entry administration of the public security organ under the local people's government at or above the county level, and submit relevant materials about the specific application matters in accordance with relevant requirements. If, upon examination, the reasons for extension are appropriate and sufficient, an extension shall be granted; if an extension is denied, the foreigner concerned shall leave China on the expiry of the validity period specified in their residence permits.

Article 36 of the Exit and Entry Administration Law of the People's Republic of China

Decisions made by the exit/entry administration of the public security organ on rejecting applications for visa extension or reissuance, or on not issuing foreigners' stay or residence permits or not extending the duration of residence shall be final.

Article 20 of the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Administration of the Entry and Exit of Foreigners

The exit/entry administration of the public security organ may verify application purposes through such means as interview, telephone inquiry, and on-site investigation. The applicant as well as the entity or individual providing invitation letters or certification documents shall cooperate.

Article 22 of the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Administration of the Entry and Exit of Foreigners

If a foreigner holding a residence permit for study intends to engage in off-campus work-study or internship, he or she shall, upon the approval of the school, apply to the exit/entry administration of the public security organ to have such information as the location and duration of the work-study program or internship placement specified in his or her residence permit.

A foreigner holding a residence permit for study shall not engage in any off-campus work-study or internship unless the information prescribed in the preceding paragraph is specified in his or her residence permit.

Article 26 of the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Administration of the Entry and Exit of Foreigners

Upon discovery of one of the following circumstances, the entity that employs a foreigner or admits a foreign student shall, in a timely manner, report to the exit/entry administration of the public security organ of the local people's government at or above the county level:

(1) A foreign employee resigns or changes employment location;

(2) A foreign student admitted has left the school as he or she has graduated, completed the course(s) or study, drop out or quit school;

(3) A foreign employee or a foreign student admitted violates the provisions on administration of exit and entry;

(4) A foreign employee or a foreign student admitted dies, disappears or other serious circumstances arise.

Foreigners applying for changes in their residence permit registration and birth registration in Beijing shall comply with the following legal provisions.

Article 33 of the Exit and Entry Administration Law of the People's Republic of China

The registered items of a foreign residence permit shall include name, sex, date of birth, reason for residence and duration of residence of the holder, date and place of issuance, the number of passport or other international travel document. Where the registered item in a foreigner's residence permit has changed, the holder shall, within 10 days from the date of change, apply to the exit/entry administration of the public security organ under the local people's government at or above the county level in the place of residence for going through the formalities for alteration.

Article 40-1 of the Exit and Entry Administration Law of the People's Republic of China

For foreign infants born in China, their parents or agents shall, within 60 days after they are born, based on the strength of the birth certificates, go through the formalities for stay or residence registration for them with the exit/entry administration of the public security organ under the people's government at or above the county level in the places of their parents' stay or residence.
