The Grand Canal, the world's longest artificial canal and one of China's greatest ancient hydraulic engineering feats, was originally constructed during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods and continually developed through successive dynasties. It facilitated economic and cultural exchange between northern and southern China, reinforced centralized authority, and promoted ethnic integration. Today, thriving urban sub-centers along its banks are a testament to its enduring legacy. It was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2014.
