The Qianlong Garden in Beijing's Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City, will partly open to visitors this September for the first time in nearly 100 years.
Built in the 1770s, the garden is part of the Palace of Tranquil Longevity in the northeast section of the Forbidden City. It covers more than 6,000 square meters and features four courtyard complexes and 27 structures scattered among artificial rock gardens.
As part of Emperor Qianlong's retreat after his abdication, the garden embodies his aesthetic sensibilities and personal tastes. It is an outstanding example of interior decorative craftsmanship in 18th-century Chinese imperial architecture.
