As of now, Beijing has 144 state-level representative intangible cultural heritage items and 303 municipal representative intangible cultural heritage items, with 13 of them selected into the UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, ranking first among the country.
The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism has included the ICH protection in the overall planning of the city and explored the joint point and meeting point between diverse ICH items and tourism-integrated development, with continuous improvements on the "toolkit" of ICH classification and protection policies.
Beijing has promoted the construction of the first municipal Intangible Cultural Heritage Collection Division to showcase the version resources of intangible cultural heritages. In addition, the first Beijing International Week of Intangible Cultural Heritage was launched in 2023 to enhance the global influence of Beijing ICH.
Through the foundation of the first municipal Intangible Cultural Heritage Experience Center, Beijing has built a new platform for ICH promotion and display. Since its completion in 2024, the experience center has launched a series of ICH experience and exchange events to demonstrate the charm of Beijing ICH.
By organizing consuming events empowered by intangible cultural heritages and further exploring the commercialized protection and development path of intangible cultural heritages, Beijing has united major e-commerce platforms to hold special events for Beijing ICH for the first time, constructing a consuming mode that encompasses all life scenes including foods, clothes, uses, and collections. From 2020 to 2024, the average annual sales of the Beijing ICH consuming event has exceeded CNY 100 million.
