Are there any other visa-free transit policies in China apart from the 72/144-hour visa-free transit policies?

China has implemented a 24-hour visa-free transit policy for foreign nationals from all countries around the world at all its accessible exit-entry ports. Foreign nationals holding valid international travel documents and connecting tickets with confirmed seats, who intend to transit via China by international flights, ships, or trains to third countries or regions are exempt from visa applications, provided that their stay periods in China will not exceed 24 hours and that they will remain within the corresponding ports or permitted stay areas. Those who plan to leave the ports or the permitted stay areas must apply for temporary entry permits at the exit-entry border inspection authorities of the corresponding ports. Any foreign national with a connecting ticket for an international flight departing within 24 hours for a third country or region via nine designated international airports can exit China without completing border check procedures. These airports are Beijing Capital International Airport, Beijing Daxing International Airport, Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport, Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, and Xi'an Xianyang International Airport.

What should foreign nationals be aware of after they enter China under the 72/144-hour visa-free transit policies?

During their visa-free stay periods, foreign nationals shall abide by Chinese laws and regulations, and shall not travel beyond the permitted areas and time. For any foreign national staying in a hotel, the hotel concerned shall register his/her accommodation information. For any foreign national dwelling or staying in a domicile other than a hotel, he/she or his/her host shall register his/her accommodation information at the local police station or foreigner service station within 24 hours of his/her entry.

What shall foreign nationals do if they cannot leave within the permitted stay period or needs to travel beyond the permitted area(s)?

For any foreign nationals who need to stay in China for a period longer than allowed or travel beyond the permitted area(s) due to reasonable emergencies or force majeure, they shall apply in advance at the exit/entry administration authority of a public security organ for their corresponding stay permit.

Any foreign nationals who have overstayed or traveled beyond the permitted areas, tried to exit through a port other than the permitted one(s), or failed to complete accommodation registration pursuant to the law during their stay period, the public security organ or entry-exit border inspection authority in charge shall deal with the matters in accordance with the law.
