Lying in the northwest of Beijing, Yanqing is one of the city's suburban districts. The district neighbors Huairou in the east, joins Changping in the south, borders Huailai County of Hebei in the west, neighbors Chicheng County of Hebei in the north and is 74 kilometers away from Deshengmen in Beijing. Yanqing's average elevation is over 500 meters, making it known as the "summer capital" of Beijing as it enjoys unique weather pattern of being warm in winter and cool in summer. The main peak of its Haituo Mountain is at an altitude of 2,241 meters, making it the second highest mountain in Beijing. Yanqing covers a total area of 1,993.75 square kilometers, of which 72.8% is mountainous area, 26.2% plains and 1% water area.

Up to the end of December 2019, there were 357,000 permanent residents in Yanqing. Among them, 45,000 are permanent migrants, accounting for 12.6% of its permanent residential population. There were 213,000 urban residents, accounting for 59.7% of its permanent residential population.

Yanqing is Beijing's eco-conservation area and remains committed to taking a path of eco-conservation-driven development and carrying out eco-civilization development strategy at full scale. Moreover, Yanqing has promoted Two Mountains Theory (lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets) innovation base for theory and practice forcefully, and over the years, the district has garnered a succession of recognitions and titles, including "National Water Ecology Civilized City", "National Forest City", "National All-for-One Tourism Demonstration Area", "National Health District", "National Demonstration Base for Sports Industry", "Beijing Renewable Energy Demonstration Base", "National Demonstration Area for Pollution Source Control in Rural Areas" and "Two Mountains Theory Practice and Innovation Base".

Yanqing enjoys quality soil condition, clean water and fresh air, making it a green barrier and backyard garden of Beijing. There are ten natural reserves of national, municipal and district levels in the district, such as Songshan Mountain, Yudu Mountain and Wild Duck Lake, covering close to 100 square kilometers of wetland area. In 2019, the district's forest coverage increased to 60.34% and the afforested area accounted for 22.9% of the city's total and its rate of woody plant coverage was 72.53%. The district's PM 2.5 accumulated concentration index stood around 37 ug/m³ and was five micrograms lower than Beijing's average. Moreover, the district's surface water condition keeps leading in the capital city.

Yanqing enjoys sound living conditions. There are 9 parks in the district, covering close to 20% of the district's area. The district's per capita green space area and park green space area reaches 53.14 square meters and 46.13 square meters respectively. Among those parks, the Guishui Park occupies a land area and water area of 6,000 and 5,000 mu (a unit of area=0.0667 hectares) respectively, making it the largest water park in Beijing. Here in Yanqing, a gorgeous park garden landscape featuring "a city full of mountains and waters and half-full of parks" is gradually taking shape, giving you the feeling that "you can find urban space inside parks, and you can see parks surrounding urban spaces and thus there is a mingling of urban space and scenic spots". Moreover, the over 100,000 mu  of four major eco-landscape corridors showcases the gorgeous view as a result of creating eco-landscape and green parks, and they are Guihe River Eco-Leisure Corridor, Guanting Reservoir Eco-Pool Belt, Beishan Mountain Eco-Leisure Sightseeing Belt and Longqingxia Gorge Downstream Forrest Park.

Yanqing is devoted to developing green economy to fulfill its role as an eco-conservation area in Beijing. The district is committed to building a sophisticated green industry system with Yanqing characteristics where cultural tourism will be a leading sector and priority will be given to foster and support four industries including modern horticulture, ice-snow sports, new energy and energy Internet and UAV, where metropolitan modern agriculture will be a foundation and where three golden name cards, namely, "Winter Olympic Games, International Horticultural Expo and the Great Wall", will be the main themes.

In 2019, Zhongguancun Yanqing Science Park attracted 751 enterprises and newly assigned hi-tech enterprises titles to 102 ones. 18 companies were listed in Zhongguancun's "Gazelle Companies", 6 companies entered the list of "Rising Enterprises" and 2 in the list of "Golden Enterprises". The district's per capita land output rate and labor output rate increased by 29.2% and 26% respectively. Meanwhile, the district-wide total output from industries above designated size totaled 10.904973 billion yuan, achieving 19.3% year-on-year growth. Yanqing stays focused on pushing industrial integration led by cultural tourism, coordinating the construction of the Great Wall Cultural Belt, Xishan Yongdinghe Cultural Belt and Beijing-Zhangjiakou Culture& Sports Tourism Belt, building an intelligent service system for all-for-one tourism and striving to become one of the first demonstration areas for national B&B development and all-for-one tourism. Moreover, the district received 17.035 tourists, making district-wide tourism revenues from A-level and major scenic spots of 1.090843 billion yuan, Yanqing has leveraged its modern horticulture industry to facilitate agricultural transformation and upgrading, carried out a horticulture industry layout of "One District with Multiple Gardens", pioneered the first agro-product brand of "Guishui Agriculture" in Beijing and preliminary built an industry system with five major agro-products at its core. Meanwhile, Yanqing has kept pace with the tides of consumption upgrading, brought in chain brands, developed nighttime economy and tapped its people's consumption potential.

As the host for International Horticultural Exhibition 2019 (Expo 2019 in short) and part of competition events of 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (Winter Olympic Games for short), Yanqing spared no effort to ensure the smooth running of the Winter Olympic Games and Expo 2019. As per requirements from the municipal government to ensure facility guarantee and environment regulation engineering surrounding exposition area in 2019, Yanqing has adopted an efficient "1+18+414" three-tiered control system and management approach of "convenient to enter and exit, and easy access to food, accommodation and entertainment" to guarantee a number of works including fine management combined with routine practices for traffic services, catering and hospitality, medical care and health, first-aid, communication access maintenance, environment and weather conditions. The Expo 2019 went on successfully for the entire span of 162 days and attracted 9.34 million guests at home and abroad, presenting a perfect and even victorious closure.
Yanqing is speeding up its efforts to promote the construction of the 28 venues for the Winter Olympic Games and their surrounding supportive infrastructure. At present, part of the racing tracks and related facilities for Alpine Skiing Center have been delivered and put in use, the main structure of the National Snowmobile Sled Center has been completed, and steady progress has been made for Yanqing Winter Olympic Villages and mountain-based news center. At the same time, the utility tunnel has also been put in use and Xidazhuangke Village renovation project is getting started. Moreover, Yanqing has started the Winter Olympic Forrest Park project in a bid to restore its eco-system along the way. Apart from that, the Haituo Mountain Weather Radar and Automatic Meteorological Station in Yanqing Competition Area have been fully completed, and Winter Olympic Yanqing Meteorological Service Sub-Center has been built and put in use. By the end of 2020, Yanqing competition area will be basically built and be the location for over ten series of test events. Furthermore, Yanqing is dedicated to providing competition services. The district has already signed with 14 hotels for reception work and Winter Olympic Medical Section will soon be available. Meanwhile, Yanqing government has participated in the World Winter Sports (Beijing) Expo, pulled off 14 ice and snow competition events including national speed skating marathon, and altogether organized training regarding campus-based ice sports and residential ice sports for over 50,000 participants. Eventually, Yanqing as a "beautiful summer capital and a host to ice& snow sports" will continue to leverage its urban brand influence and make its name heard more often at home and abroad.
