Miyun District

Located in northeastern Beijing, Miyun District is an eco-conservation area, and an important source of drinking water for Beijing Municipality. With a total area of 2,229.45 sq.km, it is the largest district in Beijing Municipality, and also a most beautiful one. With a permanent population of 528,000, the jurisdiction of Miyun district is comprised of 17 towns, 2 sub-disrticts, and 1 regional affairs administration office.

Miyun is known for its unique landscape composition: mountains taking up 80 percent of the total area, water for 10 percent, and farmland for 10 percent. Mountainous areas cover four fifths of Miyun, and the water source conservation area covers three fourths of the district. Located in the center of Miyun, Miyun Reservoir has a water surface area of 188 sq.km and a maximum storage capacity of 4.375 billion cubic meters. It is a vital source of drinking water for the capital.

Transportation in Miyun is convenient as well. The main transportation lines include the Beijing-Chengde Expressway and other roads such as Jingshen Road, Shunmi Road, Miguan Road, and Mixing Road. There is also Miyun's suburban railway, known as Line S5, and the Tongzhou-Miyun Line. The light rail S6 line is currently being planned and will have a station in Miyun, which will make Miyun's transportation even more convenient.

Miyun boasts the best eco-environment across Beijing. It enjoys a total forestry coverage rate of 73.63 percent, and a forty-fold NAI concentration compared with downtown areas of Beijing.

Miyun District is the largest eco-conservation area in Beijing Municipality. According to the Master Plan of Beijing Municipality, Miyun District's functions are specified as an important water source conservation area, a regional eco-governance coordination zone, a national eco-civilization pioneering demonstration area, and an eco-friendly cultural, recreational, and innovative development demonstration zone.

Using its industrial development as a foundation along with its regional function positioning, Miyun District has established a "2+4" high-quality industrial development system that is unique to Miyun. Miyun will accelerate the high-end and integrated development of premium agriculture and eco-culture tourism, which are two of its fundamental industries. It will also focus on bolstering its four leading industries of medicine and health, intelligent manufacturing, energy conservation and environmental protection, and scientific and technological services.

In 2020, Miyun's gross regional product reached CNY 33.86 billion, 1.6 percent lower than that of 2019 in terms of comparable prices. Miyun's added value to the primary industry was CNY 1.26 billion, a drop of 10.5 percent. Added value to the secondary industry was CNY 8.52 billion, a drop of 18.5 percent. However, added value to the tertiary industry amounted to CNY 24.07 billion, an increase of 6.8 percent. The composition of Miyun's three industries was subsequently tuned from 4.0:29.9:66.1 in 2019 to 3.7:25.2:71.1.
