Covering an area of 306 square kilometers, Fengtai has 2.025 million permanent residents. The district sits in south of Beijing's urban area, functioning as the capital's southern gate and back-land. In 2019, Fengtai achieved a total GDP of 182.96 billion yuan, a 6.3 percent growth rate year-on-year, and the district's service industry's contribution to GDP was up to 85 percent.

Fengtai is a strategically significant district that complements Beijing's capital function layout. Beijing's urban layout features "one core area, one main area, one sub-center, two axes, multiple points and one district", where Fengtai fits the role of "one main area", namely, the central urban district; meanwhile, Fengtai is one axis of the "two axes", that is south-central axis. In addition, Fengtai connects to "one core area", namely core district of capital function; the district also links to "two wings", that is subcenter of Beijing and heartland of Xiong'an New Area. That makes Fengtai accessible in all directions and it is the only district neighboring five other central districts and connects with two new towns and an eco-conservation area. Fengtai is also known to be a bullet train hub as it boasts two comprehensive train stations: Beijing West Railway Station and Beijing South Railway Station. Moreover, Fengtai Railway Station, another major comprehensive railway station, is on the way. Nanyuan area of Fengtai is only 30 kilometers away from Daxing International Airport and the Caoqiao Terminal near 3rd ring has been in operation. Moreover, the Lize Urban Terminal within 3rd ring is under planning. Once built, it'll shorten the travel time from Lize to Daxing Airport by speed rail and a range of services can be enjoyed, such as customs clearance, airport security check, luggage check and duty-free products shopping.
Fengtai has distinctive industry and innovation resources. The Zhongguancun Fengtai Science Park features two industry clusters, namely rail transit and aerospace industry, covering the whole industry chain for rail transit, pooling a number of research institutes and enterprises both upstream and downstream, and fostering four ten-billion-level industry clusters with market value of tens of billions of yuan. In addition, Lize Financial Business District is a cluster for emerging financial sector and a pilot zone for capital's financial reforms. Fengtai is also dedicated to prioritizing emerging business formats such as Internet finance, digital finance, financial information, financial intermediary and financial culture.
Fengtai boasts abundant spatial resources. Fengtai's vast industrial space potential can be seen in key function areas and their surroundings such as Zhongguancun Fengtai Science Park, Lize Financial Business District and Capital Business New District, as well as other important areas for the capital's urban function layout like south-central axis area.
The completed part of Zhongguancun Fengtai Science Park has already exceeded 5 million square meters in coverage, which left near 5 million square meters more to be built down the road. Lize Financial Business District is the latest sizable industrial function zone within 3rd ring and near 2nd ring of Beijing. Soon enough, building complex of several millions of square meters will be in operation and the landmark Lize SOHO is already in business. The Capital Business New District is on the two sides of south-central axis area, somewhere between south 3rd ring and south 4th ring, covering an area of roughly 7.6 square kilometers. The new district serves to reserve development space for Beijing's function extension in the new era.
Fengtai features great eco-environment. Greenery coverage in Fengtai is 47 percent and the district's water area covers 8 square kilometers in total. The government of Fengtai District spares no efforts to push green space closer to its people's door side and enables its residents to find a park within 500 meters, an urban park within 2 kilometers and a forest park within 5 kilometers. Fengtai plans to build the Nanyuan Forest Wetland Park, a royal-style garden covering 16,000 mu (about 1067 hectares) on the two sides of south-central axis area. Once built, it will be three times the size of the Olympic Forest Park and it's going to be a mega-sized green space incorporating eco-restoration, leisure, fitness, science dissemination and education, cultural creation and high-end business. The forest park will be a model of blending forest into urban areas and become a significant pillar for Beijing's urban space design.
Accelerated deployment of Fengtai's public services. The government of Fengtai District sticks to the strategy of education first and has established 16 education groups including Beijing No.12 High School and 8 education clusters over the years. At the same time, the district has introduced a large number of quality-oriented educational resources including Beijing No.4 High School, The High School Affiliated to Renmin Universityof China, The Experimental High School Attached to Beijing Normal University, Beijing National Day School and Peking University Elementary School. Fengtai enjoys unique strength in children education as the district taps the full potential of resource clustering and promotes education on aerospace science and technology and their role in building a strong country, as well as education on the inheritance of traditional opera culture.
The government of Fengtai District continues to strengthen its medical portfolio as Beijing Tiantan Hospital and Peking University Hospital of Stomatology joined Fengtai. Meanwhile, the Quality Improvement and Renovation project for Fengtai Hospital is also underway. The district also boasts distinctive medical resources with 3-A qualifications like Beijing Fengtai Hospital of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, Dongfang Hospital and Beijing Boai Hospital. Moreover, Fengtai enjoys outstanding community-based medical service and its Fangzhuang "Smart Family Doctor" has been followed across the country.
