Beijing Municipal Ethnic and Religious Affairs Commission has the following as its main functions:

I. Organizing the investigation and study of ethnic and religious issues in Beijing, drawing up relevant local laws and regulations and government regulations, and putting forward policy recommendations on ethnic and religious work.

II. Supervising and inspecting the implementation of policies and measures for ethnic and religious work in Beijing. Being responsible for the publicity and education of ethnic and religious laws, regulations and policies.

III. Participating in the formulation of Beijing's special plans for ethnic economy, culture, education, etc. Assisting relevant departments in promoting the development of ethnic undertakings. Cooperating with relevant departments to hold major ethnic cultural and sports activities. Coordinating relevant authorities to collate the ancient books of minority ethnic groups.

IV. Carrying out activities to promote ethnic unity and progress. Protecting the legitimate rights and interests of citizens of minority ethnic groups according to the law and coordinating the relationship among ethnic groups. Establishing a link with representatives of minority ethnic groups and religious circles. Coordinating and promoting relevant departments of Beijing Municipality to perform their duties related to ethnic work and establishing a service system for ethnic affairs.

V. Cooperating with relevant authorities to promote the development of ethnic rural economy, halal food industry and designated enterprises that produce special commodities needed by the ethnic groups. Carrying out analysis and research on the economic development of ethnic villages and halal food industry.

VI. Administering religious affairs in Beijing Municipality according to the law and protecting the citizens' freedom of religious belief and normal religious activities. Safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of the religious people. Guiding all religions in the direction of sinicization. Giving full play to the positive role of religious figures and believers in economic and social development.

VII. Guiding the religious organizations in Beijing to carry out activities in accordance with the laws and regulations, and supporting religious organizations to strengthen their self-construction. Guiding religious organizations in setting up religious colleges and universities. Being responsible for foreign-related religious affairs.

VIII. Being responsible for the training of ethnic and religious leaders, assisting the relevant departments in the training, selection and employment of leaders of minority ethnic groups. Cooperating with relevant authorities to deal with emergencies involving ethnic groups and religions.

IX. Completing other tasks assigned by the Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government.
