Hailing from Madagascar, Sambila Odette Richette traveled thousands of miles to study in China, carrying with her the hopes of both her family and her homeland. A chance encounter with Chinese martial arts sparked a deep passion in her heart. With every punch and kick, and every drop of sweat, she has been pursuing her own kung fu dream far from home.

From her first glimpse of martial arts on the silver screen to her confident performances in competition, Odette has come to see it as far more than a combination of strength, flexibility and precise movement. For her, it embodies the philosophy of ending conflict through restraint, as well as the wisdom of cultivating both inner strength and character. Through martial arts, she has gained a deeper understanding of China and a greater appreciation of Chinese culture. At the same time, she has found her path through cross-cultural exchange.

The year 2026 marks the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges. Through her passion and youthful spirit, Odette is helping write a new chapter of mutual understanding, friendship and shared development between China and Africa.

Her story has only just begun, but stories like hers continue to breathe warmth and vitality into the enduring friendship between China and Africa.
