On Luomashi Street in Xicheng District, Daji Xiang combines traditional courtyard-style (siheyuan) architecture with a modern design, presenting a layout combining protected heritage sites, commercial spots, and an urban park. This commercial area brings a new sense of life to Beijing. Walking into Daji Xiang, you will find gray brick walls and traditional tiled roofs interwoven with modern commercial spaces. The area is home to several historical sites, including the former residence of Kang Youwei in Beijing, a former site of Bianyifang (a restaurant), and the former site of Weekly Review (每周评论, a magazine). After being carefully renovated, these cultural landmarks are now open to the public with a renewed presentation.
Join Spanish photographer Sofía Gracía as she guides you through this area — which underlines the blend of traditions and modernity — with some of her photographs.
