At the Forum on Global Innovation Hubs and Science Cities held by Tsinghua University on November 21, the Global Innovation Hubs Index 2024 and the Nature Index Science Cities 2024 supplement reports were released. According to the reports, Beijing remains the world's leading science city, topping the global science city rankings for eight consecutive years.
Since 2016, Beijing has consistently led the Nature Index Science Cities rankings. This year, the index analyzes global scientific development trends by focusing on the 2023 research outcomes of major cities and metropolitan areas published in Nature Index journals. The latest figures show that Beijing's research output has grown by nearly nine percent.
In the Global Innovation Hubs Index 2024 report, Beijing ranks third globally, next to San Francisco-San Jose and New York. This index, now in its fifth consecutive year, evaluates the innovation capabilities of 120 cities (metropolitan areas) worldwide across 30 indicators in three dimensions: Research Innovation, Innovation Economy, and Innovation Ecosystem. It highlights new trends and landscapes in global innovation hubs.
Over the past three years, Beijing's ranking has remained stable, cementing its position as a global hub for technological innovation thanks to its top-notch research strength and profound academic resources. It has also seen steady growth in the number of internationally collaborative research papers.
