Pat Metheny is hailed as "the world's foremost jazz guitarist", with innumerable "Best Jazz Guitarist" titles and awards to his name. He has won 20 Grammy Awards across 12 distinct categories, making him the only artist globally to receive Grammys in ten different fields. His band, the Pat Metheny Group, holds the historic distinction of being the only group to win seven consecutive Grammy Awards for seven consecutive albums.

Metheny bridges jazz with other musical genres. His ensemble configurations span solo guitar, small bands, electronic and acoustic instruments, and large orchestras. His works traverse styles including symphonic music, film scores, ballet compositions, classical, pop, acoustic, electronic, folk, and rock.

Pat Metheny has also developed a technology-driven music project—Orchestrion, featuring solenoid-powered mechanical self-playing instruments. This initiative blurs the boundaries between traditional acoustic instruments and electronic music, hailed as a "mechanical symphony" and "a milestone in futuristic jazz".
