The museum is a key venue for the conservation, research, and exhibition of cultural relics, also functioning as a hub for cultural exchanges. Its collection is mainly from the former holdings of the Qing imperial court, with nearly 40,000 cultural relics in its collection, including more than 20,000 precious relics of Grade I, Grade II and Grade III. Spanning from the Shang and Zhou dynasties to modern times, the collection now covers almost all categories of Chinese handed-down cultural relics, including bronze ware, porcelain, jade, calligraphical works and paintings. These exquisite relics were accumulated over the long history of the Summer Palace as an imperial garden complex, to meet the needs of interior and exterior display. They stand as precious testimony to the historical evolution and cultural significance of China's imperial gardens. Being the one of the highest grade among all classical Chinese gardens, the museum has the largest numbers of both relics and relic varieties.
