The Wangfujing Paleolithic Cultural Remains, a late Paleolithic site dating back about 24,000 to 25,000 years, were discovered during the construction of Oriental Plaza in 1996. This was one of the most significant discoveries of ancient human remains in the Beijing area after the archeological discoveries in Zhoukoudian, and it marks the first time such remains have been found in the center of an international megacity.
The site preserves evidence of ancient human habitation, including ash pits and charcoal residues left from fire use, as well as multiple bone fragments and tools such as stone hammers and bone spades. These relics collectively illustrate the lifestyle and living conditions of ancient humans.
