The museum is a national art institution dedicated to the collection, research, and exhibition of modern and contemporary Chinese artworks.

It now houses a collection of approximately 100,000 artworks of various forms, focusing on the works created around the time of the founding of the People's Republic of China. It also includes masterpieces by artists from the early years of the Republic of China era, the Qing Dynasty, and the last decades of the Ming Dynasty. Overall, most artworks are modern and contemporary ones, including works of famous painters who have had a significant impact on Chinese traditional paintings in the 20th century.
The museum also houses a large number of representative works by renowned Chinese artists, award-winning pieces from major art exhibitions, and a diverse array of folk artworks.
