Situated in No. 141 Chaoyangmenwai Street, Chaoyang District, the site of the museum is Dongyue Temple, one of the major historical and cultural sites protected at the national level.
Funded by Taoist masters Zhang Liusun and Wu Quanjie, Dongyue Temple was built in 1319, the sixth year of the Yanyou Reign of Yuan Dynasty to worship Dongyue, the God of Mount Tai. It was later expanded in the Ming and Qing dynasties, and gradually established the architectural layout consisting of the middle main courtyard and the east and west courtyards. Covering an area of about 47,400 sqm, the temple has over 300 rooms in different architectural styles of the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, which are considered treasures of ancient buildings. Historically, the Dongyue Temple was a place of national rituals and grand folk activities, making it a center of folk culture with a rich heritage. In 1996, Dongyue Temple was listed as a major historical and cultural site protected at the national level by the State Council. In 1997, the Administrative Office of Dongyue Temple and Beijing Folk Museum was founded, and it was officially opened to the public in 1999.
