Beijing ivory carving refers to the long-established traditional technique of using ivory as the carving material originating from Beijing. Archaeological materials show that the history of ivory carving in Beijing can be traced back to more than 2,000 years ago. Emperors of the Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties all built their capitals in Beijing, where ivory was used as a royal tribute. Excellent artists from abroad met with local ivory craftsmen in Beijing to learn from each other by exchanging views. After hundreds of years of integration and accumulation of different styles and cultural backgrounds, the unique style of Beijing ivory carving was formed. The modern Beijing ivory carving is mainly represented by the creations of Yang Shihui and his disciples.
