The exhibition "Pompeii: A Never-Ending Discovery" will open to the public at the National Museum of China on February 4.
The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 buried the city of Pompeii under volcanic ash, yet preserved real-life snapshots of the everyday life of the ancient Romans there. For over 2,000 years, Pompeii has continued to be uncovered, interpreted, and re-examined, becoming a vital window into the ancient world.
This exhibition traces the exploration of Pompeii since its rediscovery in the 18th century through archaeological discoveries. Drawing on the latest archaeological findings, it offers a fresh perspective on the historical landscape of Pompeii as a major city of the Roman Empire and the daily lives of its people.
The exhibition will feature 105 well-selected artifacts (including sets) from Italy, including marble sculptures, frescoes, pottery, bronzeware, and gold ornaments. Among these, 81 will be shown in China for the first time, and seven have never been displayed even in Italy. The exhibition also includes three immersive experience zones that present archaeological discoveries through multi-dimensional displays, offering visitors an engaging and awe-inspiring experience.
